“When I lost Thor I had no idea it was possible to lose so much in an entire lifetime much less in a single moment, and I know that in light of recent events some of us have lost faith, but I want all Americans to know about Moses, Derek, Thor and all the officers out there who every day risk their lives protecting all of us.” – Jennifer Loudon, whose husband Thor Soderberg, a Chicago police officer, was killed in the line of duty last year.

It was a somber moment at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, but a very important one when the families of fallen police officers took the stage. Jennifer Loudon, Wayne Walker, and Wayne and Barbara Owens — all of whom are united in grief — spoke for several minutes about their husbands and children: police officers killed in the line of duty.

Derek Owens was a Cleveland police officer killed in 2008; Moses Walker Junior was a Philadelphia police officer killed in 2012.

“In Moses’ living room I found a pile of Christmas presents, it was in August,” his mother, Wayne Walker, said. “For Moses, he always thought ahead. He bought gifts for relatives, for single parents, for strangers down on their luck, one of these presents didn’t even have a name on it. I still have it.”T
