As result of a lawsuit filed in 2016, the City of Long Beach has agreed to pay a settlement of $85,000 to Kirsty Powell, an African American Muslim woman whose hijab was pulled off by a male officer while she was in police custody. Kirsty Powell was detained for 24 hours without her hijab, and was only allowed to put it back on once she was released and given her bag of personal belongings. As a result of this lawsuit, the City of Long Beach has updated its policies and now will be allowing inmates to wear religious head coverings while they are in custody.
